Emily Lyons

Emily joined CFS in December of 2015 and teaches the 5th and 6th grade class. Before that, she taught in the Cambridge Public Schools for 20 years. Emily did not set out to be a teacher: after getting her undergraduate degree in biology at Oberlin College, she hoped to go into museum work or scientific illustration. After working in entomology labs for two years, she moved to Boston and got jobs at The Children’s Museum and the Museum of Science, where she discovered that she liked working with children. Emily started out as a middle school science teacher, but gradually moved into all the subjects.

She appreciates that CFS is small, child-centered and focused on justice. Working here has inspired her to incorporate many of her outside interests and skills, such as yoga, insects, art, and drama, into the curriculum.
