FAQs about Cambridge Friends

What is a Quaker education?

Since 1683, Quaker schools have been part of this country’s educational fabric. Quaker schools have distinguished themselves by providing strong academic programs and through their commitment to recognizing the worth of each individual. Cambridge Friends School is one of over 80 Quaker schools in the United States, and it is the only Quaker school in Massachusetts. Quaker education emphasizes critical thinking skills, in which each person’s unique insights contribute to a collective learning. Students who graduate from a Quaker school walk away with a strong sense of self. They are better prepared to deal with adversity and they understand the need to promote harmony in their quest for knowledge. Students are challenged to develop inner resources for discipline and achievement. Each student’s gifts and talents are honored.

At Cambridge Friends, the Quaker values of peace, community, social justice, nonviolent conflict resolution, and tolerance and respect for all people are part of every school day. There is no direct religious instruction at the school; rather, it is a place of lived values. Learn more about our Quaker Values

What if my family isn’t Quaker?

While Cambridge Friends is a Quaker school, many of our families are not Quaker but appreciate the values and inquiry-based approach to learning that a Quaker school delivers. People of all faiths are welcome at CFS, and many are represented in our faculty, staff, student body and Board of Trustees.

Is Cambridge Friends accredited?

Cambridge Friends School is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), is accredited by the Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE), and is a member of the Friends Council on Education.

Does Cambridge Friends accept students with learning disabilities?

While we do accept students with learning differences, we carefully consider whether the student will be successful at CFS. Our limited learning specialist support at CFS is an inclusion model and is focused on reading, writing, and math support. We do not offer OT, PT, speech or language, or other special services. We encourage parents to have candid conversations with the admission office as part of the application to ensure your student will thrive at CFS.

Do you accept students mid-year?

Mid-year acceptances can occur depending on space and fit within our program. Contact us to inquire further.

Is it hard to be a new student in upper grades? Doesn’t everyone already know each other?

Teachers, students, and current families all work to welcome new students! On acceptance, the Admission office matches new students and their families with a host family to answer questions, get the inside scoop before school starts, and have a friend on the first day. The Admissions office also hosts social events where new and current students can meet. At the beginning of the year, community-building activities, group projects, reading stories about new experiences, and field trips are all ways teachers help students transition back to school and welcome new classmates.
