🌟 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲'𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆!🌟

As of October 2023, over 25 Massachusetts municipalities have officially changed Columbus Day's name to Indigenous Peoples Day while waiting for state-wide legislation to pass. The bill would replace the holiday with Indigenous Peoples Day.

Indigenous Peoples Day MA is a coalition of organizations and individuals leading the charge of getting this bill passed in Massachusetts and implementing local celebrations. The hearing date for their MA-statewide Indigenous Peoples Day bill was this week on October 3.

One way to support their work is by joining the ‘MA Statewide Indigenous Peoples Day Now!’ Boston March this Saturday, October 7, gathering at 12:00 pm EDT at Park St. Station.

Here are some other ways to celebrate and learn about the incredible Native American communities that have been here for thousands of years:

1️⃣ Read 📚: Discover the incredible stories and traditions of Native American people by reading books written by Indigenous authors. It's like exploring a whole new world!

2️⃣ Support Local Businesses 🛍️: When you shop, try to buy things from Indigenous businesses. By doing this, you help support the people who have been part of our country's history for a very long time.

3️⃣ Share Knowledge 🧠: Use your voice to teach others about Indigenous Peoples Day, just like we're doing right now. Sharing knowledge helps everyone learn and grow.

4️⃣ Have Fun Discussions 🗣️: Using chat apps with your friends, you can start a chat group to discuss Indigenous Peoples Day and learn together.

5️⃣ Attend Cool Events 🎉: Exciting events are happening all around to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. Check them out and learn more about the amazing things Native communities are doing.

6️⃣ Give Back ❤️: Consider donating to organizations that help Indigenous people, like the Mass. Center for Native American Awareness, Inc. It's a great way to show your support.

Yesterday our Second Grade class learned about the importance of reconciliation on Orange Shirt Day (September 30). Students brainstormed how people should feel when at school and consolidated their learning about residential schools across the United States and Canada. While today is a day where we honor and acknowledge the lasting impact of residential schools, we commit to continuing this learning throughout the year and engaging in the process of truth and reconciliation.

🌟 Celebrating Latinx Heritage Month 🌟

This September and October, we proudly recognize the rich tapestry of Latin American culture! 🎉🌎

“Latino communities comprise almost 20% of the U.S. population. The United States is the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, after Mexico. It is absolutely essential that CFS students develop Spanish language skills in the context of a Latino Studies framework. This approach reflects an understanding of language as social practice, one in which cultural awareness is understood to enable proficiency and the histories and perspectives of Latino communities are centered in language instruction for both “heritage” and non-native learners. This emphasis allows students to move beyond superficial understandings of language and culture towards a deeper and complex understanding of Latinidad and Latina/o/x lives.”

In light of National Latinx Heritage Month (Spanish: Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana), CFS would like to highlight its Spanish Language and Latinx Studies Program in the Middle School that offers an interdisciplinary course of studies in humanities, art, culture, social justice, and society.

About Latinx Heritage Month:
In the U.S., National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic/Latinx Americans to this country's history, culture, and achievements. The start date of the commemoration is September 15, and was chosen as it is the anniversary of the independence of five Hispanic countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, who all declared independence in 1821. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence on September 16, September 18, and September 21, respectively.

Students in Pre-K and Kindergarten work together and enjoy recess in the play garden by using foam blocks to build various play structures.

Students at CFS play outside daily in all sorts of weather and have many activities to choose from, including foam blocks, climbing trees, a sandbox and digging area, a stage, and the bamboo forest.
