Grade Two

Program Overview

The second-grade curriculum builds upon the interdisciplinary, developmental approach to learning established in grade one. This means all children see themselves reflected in the curriculum. They are taught to recognize and value their efforts and accomplishments and those of their classmates. As a result, they develop the skills necessary to be responsible and productive members of their classroom community. They continue to be encouraged to consider other points of view, to share power in work and play situations, and to recognize and speak up about injustice. They learn about and practice ethical behavior, with special attention to respect and conflict-resolution skills.

Language Arts

The second-grade year in language arts builds upon the development of reading and writing skills. Teachers continue to adapt the instruction of these skills to the needs of each child. The teaching methodology continues to incorporate direct instruction in phonics, sight vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, and the foundations of creative and expository writing. Writing continues to be used across the subject areas and includes stories, science and math recording, response journals, and simple reports.

Math

During their second-grade year, students work toward developing a strong grasp of numbers and their relationships. They use this knowledge as part of a firm foundation for understanding the base ten number system. Students continue to develop their own strategies for problem solving and are taught ways to communicate their ideas to each other, using pictures, numbers, and words.

Social Studies

Social Studies experiences are planned in an integrated way to support children as they make connections and use the skills they are learning across the curriculum in meaningful ways.
The social studies curriculum in second grade is based on a thematic study titled Cotton Clothing: From Seed to Shirt. This is a yearlong, integrated curriculum that incorporates a number of distinct strands, disciplines, and discrete units. Clothing, as a topic of study, offers a wealth of opportunities for rich exploration and study. As it follows the production of an article of clothing from seed to finished product, this theme also explores and addresses concepts of power, change, equity, and the struggle for justice, which are part of the history of clothing production and manufacturing.
