Lower School & Middle School
Physical Education (Pre-K - Grade 8) The physical education program stresses the fact that regular rigorous physical activity makes a positive contribution to children's health and learning. While it focuses on physical development, the curriculum is also designed to develop the social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of the child. Our program is structured so that all students will become increasingly confident in their athletic ability and will continue on a path to physical fitness. It is the goal of the program to help facilitate self-confidence, team membership, personal integrity and a sense of fair play. The physical education program is committed to the development of three core components: aerobic fitness, muscle strength, and flexibility. Physical Education activities are planned and aligned with developmental benchmarks for physical education based upon a progression of skills. Instruction in physical education is varied according to individual students' needs as well as whole group needs. Teachers use a wide variety of materials in order to address a diverse range of student interests and learning needs. Equipment is modified for students who are challenged by tasks that involve eye hand coordination. Activity stations are also used to accommodate students at different skill levels. |
