Application Process

Applying for admission to Cambridge Friends School consists of a series of simple steps, which include: a parent or guardian visit, the application, an interview, a student visit and observation, transcripts, teacher recommendations, and an admission evaluation. Please feel free to call (617.354.3880) or e-mail us (admission@cfsmass.org) to arrange for an appointment to visit the school.

Visiting CFS

The visit, which generally includes a tour and casual introductions to some faculty and staff, is an opportunity for prospective parents or guardians to talk with the admission staff about CFS, its curriculum, philosophy, and policies. The interview, held at the time of the visit, allows them the opportunity to ask specific questions and convey their goals for their child's education.

Our Open House, which is held the first Saturday of November from 1:00 to 3:00, allows families to tour the school with current parents and guardians, and to meet informally with classroom teachers.

Application

Families should submit an application for pre-K students in Early Childhood by January 9, and for kindergarten through grade seven by January 16. A nonrefundable $45 application fee should be submitted with the application. Fee waivers are available for eligible families.

Cambridge Friends School supplies families with the necessary forms for requesting copies of transcripts and for teacher recommendations. We request that parents or guardians manage this step so that they may retain complete control as to when a child's current school and teacher(s) are made aware that a child may be changing schools.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Recommendation and transcript release forms are forwarded by you to your child's current school and then returned directly to CFS by each child's school and teachers.

Admission Evaluation

The morning visit for Early Childhood includes a series of thoughtful observations and age-appropriate testing to be used as evaluative measures. Applicants for grades one through seven also participate in age-appropriate math and language arts testing during their admission visit. Students applying to Middle School, grades six through eight, are asked to take the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) in November, December or January. We require no formal testing for admission to the Lower School; however, if they are available, we do accept standardized test results.

Admission Policies

Children must be four years old by September of their entering year for Early Childhood classrooms. Children entering the school must also be toilet-trained.

Qualified siblings of enrolled students are granted first priority at the Early Childhood level. Admission decisions are need-blind. Financial need neither qualifies nor disqualifies an applicant.

An admission group consisting of faculty and admission staff determines qualification for entry into each grade. When there are more qualified applicants than spaces, admission decisions are based on composing a diverse group of children who, in the view of the faculty, will learn well with and from one another.

Notification of admission decisions is sent on March 10. Parents and guardians must respond to the school no later than April 10. Families who are notified of a space for their child after April 10 will have two weeks to make their decision regarding entrance.

A wait pool of candidates is established every year for most grades. Unless the candidate's parents or guardians inform the school to the contrary, a candidate's name will remain in the wait pool through the summer.
