Around the Halls (Fall 2006)

"Could I have done this without
my teammates?"

Noelle Meeke, our physical education teacher and coach, was inducted into the Kean University Athletic Hall of Fame this past fall. Noelle, a native of Ireland, and a three-year letter winner, was described at the award ceremony as “the driving force behind perhaps the most successful era in women's soccer history.” Noelle was selected for the All-NJAC (New Jersey Athletic Conference) squad from 1995 to 1997 and was a two-time NJAC Player of the Year. She was twice named All-America, and is the current record-holder for most career points and goals, with 164 and 69, respectively.

While she is highly honored to have been chosen for the award, Noelle will use this opportunity to continue to instill in her students the beliefs she feels most deeply:

  • teamwork and working together achieve a common goal
  • you do not need to have an award to feel accomplished

Noelle makes clear to her students that she accepted the award for her team, that she could not have achieved this honor without them. In a highly competitive and increasingly materialistic world, children often equate success with a tangible object, such as a trophy, certificate, or medal. The core of Noelle's teaching philosophy, however, is that everybody brings something unique to the team and everybody has a place on that team. For example, some children are more skilled athletically, while others are natural leaders on the playing field or court. Together they provide a wonderful balance for the strong foundation of a great team.
