Weekly Reader
May 8, 2008

The deadline for submission to Marilyn is Wednesday at 9 a.m.  Please e-mail her (mbravo@cfsmass.org) your article and put "Weekly Reader" in the subject box of all submissions so they do not end up in the spam folder. We will include non-CFS events only if space permits.
Flowers Needed for
Significant Elders Day
Please share the bounty of your personal flower gardens or pick up a little something from your favorite florist or nursery: fresh-cut floral arrangements and potted flowers are needed to decorate the registration area and refreshment tables for Significant Elders Day! If you can donate some festive flora on May 9 for our guests to enjoy, please let Jen Grella know MRSJLG1@AOL.COM. Thank you!

Volunteers Needed To Help With SIGNIFICANT ELDERS DAY on May 9

Significant Elders Day is one of the most exciting days of the year for our students: a whole building filled with special adults, followed by early dismissal! Of course, in order to ensure that all of these cherished guests enjoy their time at CFS, we need a lot of volunteers. Shifts are generally from 7:45 a.m.to 10:00 a.m. and from 9:30 a.m. to dismissal at 12:15 p.m. If you would be willing to help during one (or both!) of these shifts, please contact Jen Grella for more information at mrsjlg1@aol.com.
Cambridge Friends School 2008
T-Shirt Sale to Begin Friday, May 9

Cambridge Friends School 2008 T-Shirt Sale to begin soon! The second-graders are pleased to announce the arrival of this year's new T-shirt design. This years's design takes its inspiration from the peace sign. Children were first drawn to the idea of peace as a theme for this year's t-shirt after our
All-School Meeting for Worship that focused on the peace testimony. When we later learned that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the peace symbol, our direction seemed clear. Each second-grader has designed one of the peace symbols that are part of this year's design. Each year, the group makes decisions about where proceeds from T-shirt sales will be directed. This year, the children expressed interest in contributing to organizations that help end war, that help people in need of post-disaster support, food, shelter, as well as support in their struggle for peace. With these goals in mind, we will be donating portions of this year's proceeds to the American Friends Service Committee. T-shirt sales will begin on Friday, May 9, during Significant Elders Day. Sales will continue before and after school until we run out of stock.  Shirts for adults will cost $15 and shirts for children $10. This year, shirts were sewn by unionized workers in Palestine. The material is $100% organic cotton.  We hope you share our excitement and will wear this year's shirt with pride.  Peace, The Second Grade Team

Important Change in
School  Phone System

In response to requests from members of the community and to changes in technology, we have upgraded our telephone system.

The school phone will be put on "automatic" between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. You will always have the option of dialing "0" for the operator and getting the receptionist. If you dial a classroom extension, you will be forwarded to the classroom teacher's voicemail.

Administration and support staff will be available for your direct-dialed calls. The school's office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phones will be answered by the receptionist between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 10 a.m. and again between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. If you dial by name, please use the first 4 letters of the person's first or last name. Using only 3 letters can cause confusion because we have several people who share the first 3 letters of their names.
Summer Fun With The Turtle Club!
Become a certified Tortoise Trainer by hosting the quietest member of the community. The Tortoise Management Committee is looking for summer host families for "Turtle Boy," the adorable terrestrial tortoise who has resided at CFS since 1988.

Host families will receive supplies and turtle training, as well as an optional home visit and contact info for a trouble-shooting Tortoise Trustee. Tortoise stays will average 2-3 weeks, depending on the number of interested families. Please e-mail questions or preferred stay dates to leslie@shelmania.com.
